What Is Live-in Care?

Live-in care means a professional carer moves into your home and provides support around the clock - so you can keep living your life in your own house, rather than moving into a care home.

What a live-in carer actually does

It depends entirely on the person. For one client it's mostly company, cooking and a steady hand on the stairs; for another it's full personal care, medication prompts and support through restless nights. Most live-in carers help with a mix of washing and dressing, meals, housework, medication reminders, appointments, outings and simply being there.

The carer has their own bedroom and a daily break, usually around two hours, which is planned for a quiet part of the day. When they take longer time off, a relief carer who has been introduced in advance steps in.

How it works with Birmingham Angels

  1. You call us or send a message, and we talk through what's happening.
  2. We carry out a free assessment - at home, or on the ward if someone is in hospital.
  3. We propose a carer matched to the person's needs and personality, and you can meet them first.
  4. Care starts, often within days, and we review it regularly.

Live-in care often suits

  • Someone who needs help at different times of day and night
  • People living with dementia who are calmer in familiar surroundings
  • Couples who want to stay together
  • Anyone coming home from hospital who isn't safe on their own yet
  • People with pets, gardens or routines they don't want to give up

It may not be right when

  • Homes with no spare bedroom for the carer
  • People who need nursing interventions around the clock
  • Someone who needs two people to help them move at all times, day and night, without extra support

What does it cost?

Live-in care with us starts from £1,100 a week. In Birmingham that's often comparable with a care home for one person, and usually much less for a couple. See our pricing and our guide to choosing between live-in care and a care home.
